PROPOSAL FOR BASIC LIFE-SAVING SKILLS EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS


It happened like a flash. The entire celebration, which was filled with joy and excitement, suddenly turned into a scene of sorrow when the 28-year-old son of one of the celebrants suddenly collapsed. He was quickly rushed to a nearby public health centre, but sadly, help could not come in time.
Our CEO, who is a health practitioner, was present but could not lay hands on the basic essential materials needed to attempt resuscitation of the victim.
In a similar vein, the second scenario occurred in much the same way, leaving those around shocked and helpless as the situation unfolded so rapidly.

Introduction
Recent unfortunate incidents have highlighted the urgent need for basic life-saving knowledge among the general public, especially within school communities. Situations that could have been managed with simple first aid or emergency response skills often result in avoidable loss of lives due to lack of knowledge and preparedness.

This proposal seeks to introduce a structured program to educate students, teachers, and selected community members on essential life-saving skills.

2. Objectives
The main objectives of this program are to:
Equip students and school staff with basic first aid knowledge
Teach emergency response techniques (e.g., CPR, handling fainting, bleeding, choking)
Promote a culture of safety and preparedness in schools
Reduce preventable deaths and complications during emergencies
3. Target Audience
Primary and Secondary School Students (Upper Primary & Secondary)
Teachers and Non-Teaching Staff
Selected Community Volunteers (PTA representatives)
4. Scope of Training
The training will cover:
Basic First Aid Principles
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Management of bleeding and wounds
Choking response techniques
Handling unconsciousness and fainting
Emergency communication and referral
5. Methodology
Physical training sessions in selected schools
Practical demonstrations and simulations
Distribution of simplified training manuals
Engagement of certified health practitioners as facilitators

Phase 1: Selection of pilot schools (5–10 schools)
Phase 2: Training of Trainers (selected teachers)
Phase 3: School-wide sensitization and training
Phase 4: Monitoring and evaluation
