Rotary International stands as a global symbol of humanitarian service, driven by the timeless motto: Service Above Self. Among its cardinal programmes, the promotion of basic education and literacy occupies a central place—hence the deliberate investment in the construction of schools and learning facilities across communities.
This commitment is not incidental; it is rooted in the understanding that education is the most powerful instrument for societal transformation. Building schools is therefore not just about infrastructure, but about empowerment, equity, and sustainable development.
Why Rotary Builds Schools
Rotary’s intervention in educational infrastructure seeks to:
Expand access to quality learning environments for children
Reduce educational inequality, especially in underserved communities
Promote literacy and lifelong learning
Strengthen community development through knowledge and capacity building

The Crèche Building at Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital, donated by the Rotary Club of Akure Metro, stands as a shining example of compassionate foresight. It provides a safe and nurturing space for children, especially supporting working mothers and healthcare staff—an intervention that strengthens both family life and institutional productivity.
Similarly, the construction of classrooms at Imafo Secondary School by the Rotary Club of Akure reflects a direct investment in the future of young learners. It enhances the learning environment and inspires students to pursue education with dignity and confidence.
Addressing the Misconception
It is important to firmly discourage the notion held by some that the building of schools is a “commercial venture” for beneficiaries. This perspective is both misguided and unfair.
Rotary does not operate for profit. Its projects are funded through:

Personal sacrifices of members
Partnerships and grants
